In the production of artificial boards (such as plywood, fiberboard, particleboard, OSB, etc.), the drum dryer is one of the core equipment. Its design and working principle need to adapt to the characteristics of wood raw materials to ensure efficient and uniform drying

1. Moisture control to ensure the quality of gluing
-Adhesive curing requirements:
The adhesives used in artifical panel production (such as MDI and phenolic resin) need to be fully cured in an environment with a low moisture content (2% to 4%). Wet wood shavings /wood chips (with a moisture content typically ranging from 30% to 50%) can impede the penetration of glue and cross-linking reactions, leading to a decrease in the bonding strength.
- Avoid dilution of the glue:
Excessive moisture will dilute the adhesive, reduce the effective bonding amount and increase the production cost
2. Enhance the efficiency of hot pressing and reduce defects
- Shorten the hot pressing time
The dried wood shavings have better thermal conductivity. During hot pressing, heat transfer is faster, which can shorten the press time (for example, from 8 minutes to 5 minutes) and improve production efficiency.
- Prevent "board explosion" :
When wet wood shavings are subjected to high-temperature hot pressing, the rapid vaporization of internal moisture may cause delamination and bubbling of the board (commonly known as "board explosion").
3. Optimize the physical properties of wood shavings
- Reduce deformation:
The size of the dried wood shavings is stable, and after laying, the boards are less likely to warp or have uneven internal stress due to changes in moisture.
- Improve the screening effect:
Wet wood shavings tend to stick together into clumps and become loose after drying, which is convenient for precise classification by vibrating screens (separation of surface and core layers of wood shavings)
4. Reduce energy consumption and production costs
- Reduce the energy consumption of hot pressing
The heat energy required for drying wood shavings is much lower than that for evaporating water during hot pressing, and the overall energy consumption is lower.
- Avoid adhesive waste:
Wet wood shavings will absorb excess glue. After drying, the amount of glue used is more precise (saving 5% to 10% of adhesive costs).
5. Extend the service life of equipment
- Protect the hot press:
The steam produced by wet wood shavings can corrode the steel plates of the press and the hydraulic system. Drying can reduce equipment wear and tear.
- Reduce the risk of mold:
Wet materials are prone to mold when stored for a long time, while dried raw materials are easier to store
Wood chips, flakes /strands, sawdust, wood fibers, bamboo fibers, bagasse and so on all can be dry by the drum dryer

● Usually, at 180 to 300 degrees Celsius (adjusted according to the raw materials), the moisture can be rapidly evaporated (for example, when the moisture content of wood shavings is reduced from 40% to 3% to 5%).
● The high-temperature section (250℃+) is used for heat-resistant wood shavings (such as OSB), while the low-temperature section (80~150℃) is used for veneers or sensitive raw materials
2. Large-capacity continuous operation
● Large drum size:
With a diameter of 1.5 to 3.5 meters and a length of 8 to 25 meters, it can process 5 to 50 tons of raw materials per hour (for large-scale production lines).
● Continuous feeding
Wet raw materials enter from one end, are dried and discharged from the other end, and are combined with the conveyor belt to achieve automated production
3. Anti-sticking and wear-resistant design
● Internal structure optimization
The inner wall of the drum is equipped with lifting plates (L-shaped or honeycomb type) to increase the frequency of wood shavings turning and prevent caking.
Special coatings (such as Teflon) reduce resin adhesion (for high-resin raw materials such as pine).
● Wear-resistant materials
The contact surface is lined with manganese steel or ceramic plates to extend the service life (especially when dealing with hardwood shavings)

● Temperature segmented control
The drum is divided into 3 to 5 temperature zones to prevent local overheating (such as high-temperature dehydration at the inlet and low-temperature coking at the outlet).
● Fire prevention and explosion prevention
It is equipped with a spark detection + automatic fire extinguishing system (wood dust is flammable).
Negative pressure operation combined with cyclone dust removal reduces the risk of dust explosion
6. Energy-saving and environmentally friendly design
● Waste heat recovery
The tail exhaust gas is preheated with fresh air through a heat exchanger, saving 20% to 30% of energy.
● Low emissions
Equipped with bag filter + wet washing, it meets environmental protection standards (such as PM emission ≤30mg/m³)
