Do you know what is the OSB boards? what it can be used? and how to make OSB board?
Oriented strand board (OSB) is a type of artificial board made by hot-pressing and gluing wood chips (shavings) arranged in a certain direction. Its characteristic is anisotropy (mechanical properties vary in different directions), with high strength and stability, and it is widely used in fields such as construction, packaging and furniture manufacturing.
Mainly features of OSB board:
- High strength: The surface layer is arranged longitudinally, while the core layer is arranged horizontally or alternately. Its bending and compressive resistance performance is superior to that of ordinary particleboard
- Moisture resistance: By using waterproof adhesives (such as MDI, phenolic resin) and paraffin additives, some OSBs can reach moisture-proof (OSB/3) or structurally waterproof (OSB/4) grades
- Environmental protection property: Formaldehyde-free adhesives (such as MDI) can be used, with a low formaldehyde emission (up to ENF grade or CARB P2 standard)
- Size stable: Uniform structure, not prone to deformation, suitable for large-span applications (such as roofs and walls)
- Economical: The raw materials are mostly fast-growing wood or small-diameter wood. The cost is lower than that of plywood but higher than that of ordinary particleboard.
Mainly Application fields:
Building structure: roof liner, wall frame, floor base (replacing plywood).
Packaging and transportation: Pallets, container floor plates (with strong impact resistance).
Furniture manufacturing: Cabinets, bookshelves (surface veneering or coating required).
Decoration and renovation: Background wall, ceiling (moisture-proof treatment required)
After know what is the OSB boards, but do you know how to make OSB? what machines are required and necessary for OSB production?
The mainly production step of OSB board include: wood chipper, flakes making machine, vibrating screen, rotary dryer, resin adhesive system, mat forming line, continuous pre press, hot press, edge sizing machine, and sanding
Now let us see each important production step one by one
◆ Strands /Flakes Making Machine
Wood peeling machine
Strands
Raw material preparation
Wood selection: Use more fast-growing wood (such as poplar, pine, etc.) or small-diameter wood, branches and twigs.
Peeling and slicing: After the logs are peeled, they are cut into strands (strands) that are 40-100mm long, 5-20mm wide and 0.3-0.7mm thick by a slicer.
Drying: Wet wood shavings need to be dried through a dryer (such as a drum dryer) to reduce the moisture content to 2%-4%.
◆ Moisture Drying
Drum dryer
Rotary dryer
The dryer is a crucial piece of equipment, mainly used for drying wood shavings (wood chips).
Control the moisture content to ensure the quality of gluing
Adhesive curing requirements:
The adhesives used in OSB production (such as MDI and phenolic resin) need to be fully cured in an environment with a low moisture content (2% to 4%). Wet wood shavings (with a moisture content typically ranging from 30% to 50%) can impede the penetration of glue and cross-linking reactions, leading to a decrease in the bonding strength.
Avoid dilution of the glue:
Excessive moisture will dilute the adhesive, reduce the effective bonding amount and increase the production cost
Improve the efficiency of hot pressing and reduce defects
Shorten the hot pressing time
The dried wood shavings have better thermal conductivity. During hot pressing, heat transfer is faster, which can shorten the press time (for example, from 8 minutes to 5 minutes) and improve production efficiency.
Prevent "board explosion" :
When wet wood shavings are subjected to high-temperature hot pressing, the rapid vaporization of internal moisture may cause delamination and bubbling of the board (commonly known as "board explosion").
◆Vibrating Screen
Vibrating screen
Vibrating sieve
Core function
Size classification
The dried wood shavings are sieved according to different sizes (length, width, thickness), and are usually classified as:
Surface wood shavings (slender and uniform, used for surface directional paving to enhance strength).
Core layer wood shavings (coarser, random size, used for core layer filling to reduce costs).
Too small debris (to be removed and recycled or used as fuel).
Remove impurities
Screen out impurities such as wood chips, dust and tree bark to avoid affecting the bonding strength and the quality of the board
◆Gluing system
Gluing: After drying, the wood shavings enter the glue mixer and are mixed with the adhesive (usually MDI isocyanate or phenolic resin), with the amount of glue accounting for about 5% to 10% of the weight of the dry wood shavings.
Additives: Water repellents (such as paraffin), flame retardants, etc. may be added
◆ Mat Forming
Directional laying: Through mechanical or air-laid laying equipment, the wood shavings are laid in a directional manner along the surface layer (arranged longitudinally) and the core layer (arranged horizontally or randomly), forming a multi-layer structure (usually three layers).
◆ Continuous Pre-Press
Slab pre-pressing: Cold pressing for initial shaping to reduce thickness fluctuations
◆Hot Pressing
Hot pressing parameters: Temperature 180-220℃, pressure 3-5MPa, time adjusted according to thickness (about 3-6 minutes).
Continuous or intermittent presses: Small production lines may use multi-layer hot presses, and continuous presses are more efficient
◆ Post Treatment -Edge cutting and Sanding
Cooling and edge cutting: After the slab is taken out of the press, it is cooled and cut into standard sizes (such as 1220×2440mm).
Sanding: Surface sanding ensures flatness (optional).
Quality inspection: Check indicators such as density, strength, and moisture content
As your production capacity, each machine can be different specification and cost. Usually the full OSB board production line is fully automatic, so its smallest capacity should at least 100m3/per day. if you want the capacity less than 100m3, then it should be by manual forming.
