Do you know Bagasse can be raw material to make Chipboard? But How to make Chipboard by Bagasse?
√ | The feasibility of making particleboard from bagasse |
☆ Advantages
Renewable resources: Bagasse is a by-product of the sugar industry, with a wide range of sources and low cost.
Fiber characteristics: It contains cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, similar to wood fibers, and can provide a certain degree of binding force.
Environmental friendliness: It can replace part of the wood and reduce the consumption of forest resources.
☆ Challenges
The fibers are shorter: The fibers of bagasse are shorter than those of wood, which may affect the mechanical strength of the board.
Sugar and impurities: Residual sugar may cause mold or affect the curing of the adhesive, and pretreatment is required.
Strong water absorption: Natural bagasse is prone to absorbing moisture and requires waterproof treatment to enhance durability
√ | Production Process of Bagasse Chipboard |
(1) Raw material pretreatment
Cleaning: Remove impurities such as sugar and dust (sugar can be degraded by water washing or fermentation).
Drying: Control the moisture content at 8% to 12% to facilitate subsequent gluing.
Crushing: Break the bagasse into fibers or particles of appropriate size (similar to wood shavings).
(2) Adhesive selection
Traditional adhesives: urea-formaldehyde resin (UF), phenolic resin (PF) - low cost but containing formaldehyde.
Environmentally friendly adhesive
Soy protein glue, starch glue (suitable for low formaldehyde requirements).
Isocyanate (MDI) : It has good water resistance, but is relatively expensive.
(3) Paving and hot pressing
Mixing: Bagasse fibers + adhesive (with an adhesive content of approximately 8% to 12%).
Laying: Evenly spread into slabs (can be single-layer or multi-layer structures).
Hot pressing
Temperature: 160-180℃
Pressure: 2.5-4 MPa
Time: Adjust according to thickness (usually 0.3 to 0.5 min/mm).
(4) Post-processing
Trimming: Cut to standard size.
Sanding: Improve surface flatness.
Waterproof/anti-mold treatment (optional) :
Impregnate with paraffin or add water repellents (such as silane).
Add fungicides such as zinc borate.
√ | The properties of Bagasse Particleboard |
Index | Bagasse Chipboard | Common type Chipboard |
Density | 0.5-0.8g/cm3 | 0.6-0.8g/cm3 |
Modulus of rupture (MOR) | 10-18 MPA | 15-25 MPA |
Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) | 1500-2500 MPA | 2000-3500 PMA |
Water absorption expension rate | Higher | Lower |
Environmental protection | Degradable, formaldehyde-free glue can be selected | Some contain formaldehyde. |
Conclusion: The strength of bagasse particleboard is slightly lower than that of traditional wood particleboard, but it can meet some application requirements by optimizing the process (such as fiber modification and adhesive adjustment).
√ | Application Area |
Packaging industry: Replacing EPS foam for cushioning materials, pallets, etc.
Furniture industry: Low-load-bearing furniture (such as drawer bottoms and backboards).
Construction industry: Sound insulation boards, temporary building formwork (waterproof treatment required).
Decorative materials: After surface veneering, they are used for wall panels and ceilings
