Pretreatment of raw material

1. Collection and sorting of wheat straw

After harvesting, remove impurities such as soil and weeds, and keep the moisture content below 15% (to prevent mold).

Cut into segments of 30 to 50mm (for subsequent crushing).


2. Crushing and screening

The straw shavings are processed into 5 to 20mm in length and 1 to 3mm in width through hammer crushers or straw-specific shredders.

Vibrating screen classification: The surface layer uses fine material (<5mm), and the core layer uses coarse material (5-20mm).


Drying 

The temperature of the drum dryer is 80 to 120℃ (wheat straw has poor heat resistance and requires low-temperature drying), and the moisture content is reduced to 3% to 6%.

Note: Straw is flammable, so the temperature must be strictly controlled and a spark detection system should be equipped.


Adhesive applying

1. Adhesive selection

MDI (Isocyanate) : Preferred, with good water resistance, suitable for the high-silicon waxy surface of straw (8% - 12% glue content).

Modified urea-formaldehyde resin: Ammonium chloride curing agent (10% to 15% of the glue volume) needs to be added, but the formaldehyde release is relatively high.

2. Gluing method

The roller glue mixer or air flow atomization spray glue ensures that the glue liquid evenly covers the surface of the straw.


Forming and Pressing

1. Paving

Layer-by-layer paving: Surface fine material + core coarse material, paving density 0.4-0.6g/cm³ (loose state).

Optional mechanical or air flow spreading machines are available (the straw shavings are relatively light, and the air flow speed needs to be adjusted to prevent them from flying).

2. Hot pressing parameters

Temperature: 160-180℃ (lower than that of wood particleboard to prevent straw from charring).

Pressure: 2.5-3.5MPa, Time: 0.3-0.5min/mm for plate thickness (for example, 4-6 minutes for a 12mm plate)


Post Treament -Edge Cutting & Sanding 

1. Cooling and trimming

After being pressed out of the plate, it is naturally cooled to below 50℃ and trimmed into standard sizes (such as 1220×2440mm).

2. Sanding

The surface should be sanded (180-240 mesh) to enhance smoothness. The feeding speed needs to be controlled (the hardness of straw board is relatively low).


Technical difficulties and solutions

Environmental protection and economic benefits


Advantages:

The cost of wheat straw is low (about one-third that of wood), reducing the pollution caused by burning.

Environmental protection policy support is available (such as carbon emission reduction subsidies).


Challenge:

The equipment needs to be adapted to the characteristics of straw (such as dust-proof and explosion-proof).

Market acceptance needs to be cultivated (consumers' understanding of the performance of straw boards)
