Do you how to make Good quality particleboard /chipboard?
To produce high-quality Particle Board, strict control is required in multiple links such as raw material selection, production process, equipment control and post-treatment
■ | Raw Materials Choice and Pre-processing |
<1> Wood raw materials
Recommended tree species:
Cork (pine, fir, poplar) - long fibers, easy to process, and good adhesiveness.
Hardwood (eucalyptus, birch) - increases the density and strength of the board, but the process needs to be adjusted.
Avoid using: rotten wood, tree bark (affecting bonding strength), and wood with high resin content (easily causing the adhesive to fail)
<2> Preparation of shavings
Particle size:
Surface wood shavings: finely crushed (0.2-0.5mm), ensuring a smooth surface.
Core layer wood shavings: slightly larger (1-3mm) to enhance the internal bonding strength.
Drying treatment:
The moisture content should be controlled at 2-4% (if it is too high, it will lead to poor bonding; if it is too low, it is prone to cracking).
■ | Resin Coating and Additives |
<1> Adhesive selection
Urea-formaldehyde resin (UF) : Low cost, but high formaldehyde emission (E2 grade).
Melamine-modified urea-formaldehyde resin (MUF) : Better water resistance (suitable for moisture-proof boards).
Isocyanate (MDI) : Formaldehyde-free, environmentally friendly (E0 grade), but costly
<2> Sizing process
Glue quantity control
Ordinary particleboard: 8-12% adhesive (accounting for the weight of dry particleboard).
Moisture-proof particleboard: 10-15% adhesive + water repellent (such as paraffin emulsion).
Uniform mixing: Use a high-speed mixer to ensure that each piece of wood shavings is covered with the glue
■ | Slab Forming and Pre-press |
<1> Layered paving
The three-layer structure (fine wood shavings on the surface layer + coarse wood shavings on the core layer) enhances surface quality and strength.
Uniformity of paving: Use air flow paving machines or mechanical paving machines to avoid uneven density.
<2> Preloading
Cold pressing: Pressure 0.5-1.5 MPa, time 10-30 minutes, initial shaping.
Pre-treatment before hot pressing: After pre-pressing, the slab should be flat without any loose areas
■ | Hot Pressing |
Critical control point
Exhaust treatment: Briefly reduce the pressure during the initial stage of hot pressing to expel volatile gases (reduce bubbling).
Temperature uniformity: Avoid premature curing of the adhesive due to local overheating
■ | Post-Treatment |
<1> Cooling and humidification
Cooling: After leaving the press, natural cooling or forced air cooling is adopted to prevent deformation.
Moisture adjustment: Let it stand for 24 to 48 hours to balance the moisture content (8 to 10%).
<2> Sanding and edge trimming
Sanding: Use a broadband sanding machine to remove surface unevenness (sanding amount: 0.2-0.5mm).
Edge cutting: Precisely cut to the standard size (such as 1220×2440mm)
■ | Common Problems and Solutions |
Problem | Possible reason | Solution |
Panel layering | Insufficient glue or uneven pressure | Increase the amount of glue and check the uniformity of the paving |
Rough surface | The surface shavings are too coarse | Optimize the wood shavings screening process |
Excessive formaldehyde | The adhesive quality is poor | Switch to MDI glue or E0 grade resin |
Edge breakage | The cutting tool is worn | Replace the sharp blade |
■ | Additional measures for improving quality |
Add reinforcing agents: such as lignin fibers (to enhance toughness) or fire retardants (flame-retardant boards).
Use suitable and good quality equipment to enhance stability.
Automation control: The PLC system is adopted to precisely regulate temperature, pressure and glue volume
