Shandong Minghung has reached an important milestone in its overseas project: a continuous press main unit has successfully arrived at the customer's plant in Russia, where the company's mechanical engineers are currently on site providing intensive installation guidance. Meanwhile, to ensure the stable operation of the equipment in the long run, a batch of spare parts—including chains, butterfly snap rings, and pins—has also been dispatched and is on its way to the customer.
Continuous Press: The Core Equipment in Panel Production
The continuous press is the core hot-pressing equipment in a particleboard, MDF/HDF, or OSB production line. Its working principle is as follows: the mat travels continuously between two circulating steel belts, while the hot platens transfer pressure and heat to the mat through a roller-bar chain system, accomplishing compaction, de-gassing, and adhesive curing as the mat moves forward. Compared with traditional multi-opening presses, the continuous press offers significant advantages—tighter thickness tolerances, a thinner pre-cured layer, consistent product quality, and flexible format changes—making it particularly well suited for large-scale particleboard production. In the entire line, the running accuracy and transmission system condition of the continuous press directly determine the density uniformity and surface quality of the finished board.
Small Parts, Big Role: Functions of Chains, Butterfly Snap Rings, and Pins
The components shipped this time may appear inconspicuous, but they are indispensable to the transmission system of the continuous press.
Chains form the traction backbone of the roller-bar chain system. In a continuous press, the roller-bar chain sits between the hot platens and the steel belt; the chain drives the roller bars in a circulating rolling motion, carrying the steel belt and the mat forward. Under prolonged high-temperature and high-load conditions, chain links elongate and pitch deviations develop after several years of operation, which can cause the steel belt to deviate and affect board surface quality. Therefore, timely stocking and replacement of spare chains is a key part of preventive maintenance for the press.
Pins connect the chain link plates to the roller bars and serve as the load-bearing pivot in the transmission chain. Each pin carries the shear and wear between adjacent links, and its material and machining precision directly affect chain service life. In industry practice, pins must have sufficient surface hardness and wear resistance to withstand long-term reciprocating friction.
Butterfly snap rings (also known as butterfly springs or snap rings) provide axial positioning and elastic compensation. They sit in the snap-ring grooves of the pins, preventing axial displacement during operation while absorbing clearance changes caused by thermal expansion and contraction through elastic deformation, thereby maintaining preload between chain links. If a snap ring fails due to long-term high-temperature deformation, the pin may shift or even come out, causing chain disengagement or steel belt damage. The spare parts shipped alongside the main unit provide the customer with material assurance for scheduled maintenance and rapid parts replacement, reducing downtime losses caused by waiting for components.
