Particleboard, also known as chipboard, is a type of engineered wood panel made by bonding wood particles or other lignocellulosic materials with adhesive under heat and pressure.
Its raw material sources are diverse and can be mainly categorized as follows:
1. Wood-Based Raw Materials
Softwoods: Such as pine, fir, and spruce. Typically softer, with long fibers, they contribute to good strength and workability in the resulting particleboard. They are one of the primary raw materials.

Hardwoods: Such as poplar, eucalyptus, birch, and beech. These offer varied textures and are abundant in resources. Fast-growing species like poplar and eucalyptus have become crucial raw materials due to their short growth cycles and wide availability.

Mixed Species: In actual industrial production, wood species are often not strictly separated. A mix of various wood materials is commonly used, including logging residues, processing residues, small-diameter wood, and branches.

2. Non-Wood Plant Fiber Raw Materials
To conserve timber resources or utilize agricultural waste, the following materials can also be used to produce particleboard or specialty boards:
Crop Straws: Such as rice straw, wheat straw, hemp stalks, and bagasse (sugarcane residue). Boards made from these are often called "strawboard" and have notable environmental benefits.

Bamboo: Materials like bamboo tops, branches, and processing residues can be used to make bamboo particleboard.

Others: Flax shives, cotton stalks, fruit tree prunings, etc.
3. Recycled and Reclaimed Wood Raw Materials
Post-Consumer Wood Waste: This includes demolition wood, old furniture, discarded pallets, etc. After sorting, crushing, and cleaning, they can serve as raw material, aligning with circular economy principles.
Wood Processing Residues: This is the most traditional and core source of raw material for particleboard, primarily including:
Shavings and Sawdust: Direct by-products from sawmills, furniture factories, and door/window manufacturers.
Chips, Edgings, Trimmings: Fragments generated during primary and secondary wood processing.
Sanding Dust: Fine powder produced during panel sanding. It is typically used only in small amounts as filler or for other boards (like Medium-Density Fiberboard, MDF).

Characteristics and Selection:
The choice of raw materials directly affects the performance, cost, environmental rating, and application of the particleboard. For instance, particleboard made from pure pine may have better internal bond strength, while boards using a high percentage of recycled material require strict control over contaminants (e.g., metal, sand) and the effects of old adhesives. Today, the particleboard industry tends to use fast-growing plantation wood, processing residues, and reclaimed wood to achieve sustainable resource utilization.
