Bamboo oriented strand board (BOSB) is a high-strength artificial board mainly made of bamboo, which is formed through oriented laying and hot-pressing gluing.

The processing of Bamboo into Oriented Strand Board (BOSB) requires multiple procedures such as raw material treatment, slicing, drying, gluing, oriented laying and hot pressing
1. Raw materials -Wood strands
Preferred bamboo species: Moso bamboo, Cibamboo, Dragon Bamboo, etc. (with long fibers and good mechanical properties).
Bamboo age requirement: 3-5 years old bamboo (with high fiber maturity, avoid young bamboo or old bamboo).
- Remove the green and remove the yellow:
The bamboo green (outer waxy layer) and bamboo yellow (inner hard film) need to be removed (affecting gluing), while the bamboo flesh (fibrous layer) should be retained.
- Special bamboo slicer
To adapt to the characteristics of bamboo fiber (harder and more brittle than wood), recommended equipment:
Drum slicer: Produces long bamboo wood shavings (30-80mm in length, 5-20mm in width, 0.3-0.7mm in thickness).
Disc slicer: Suitable for short wood shavings (the blade Angle needs to be adjusted to avoid fiber breakage)
2. Moisture Drying
○ Drying objective: Moisture content should be controlled at 2-4% (Bamboo fiber has a strong hygroscopicity and needs to be thoroughly dried).
○ Equipment selection:
Drum dryer (suitable for large quantities).
Air flow dryer (energy-saving, but prone to causing wood shavings to curl).
○ Temperature control: 80-100℃ (To prevent bamboo fiber from coking due to high temperature)
3. Cylindrical Screen
○ Core layer wood shavings: Slightly coarser (50-80mm in length, 0.5-0.7mm in thickness), to enhance the internal bonding strength.
○ Screening: Remove debris and dust through a vibrating screen
4. Resin Applying
○ Adhesive selection:
MDI adhesive: Formaldehyde-free, suitable for high-end eco-friendly boards (high cost).
Phenolic resin (PF) : Strong water resistance (for outdoor-grade BOSB).
Melamine-modified urea-formaldehyde resin (MUF) : Balancing cost and performance.
○ Sizing amount:
Surface layer: 8-10% (accounting for the weight of dry wood shavings).
Core layer: 6-8%.
Uniformity of mixing: Use a high-speed ring-type glue mixer to ensure uniform coverage of the glue solution
5. Mat laying and forming
○ Paving method:
Mechanical directional laying: Bamboo shavings are arranged along the length direction through grooved rollers (similar to wood OSB).
Air flow paving: Suitable for surface fine wood shavings (with better uniformity).
○ Structural design
It is usually a three-layer structure (upper and lower surface layers in the longitudinal direction + core layer in the transverse direction), enhancing strength in all directions
6. Multi-rollers Continuous Pre-press
Pre- pressing: Pressure 0.5-1.0MPa, time 10-20 minutes, initial shaping.
Slab density: Control the density of loose slabs at 300-400kg/m³ (to avoid poor exhaust during hot pressing)
7. Hot Pressing
○ Segmented pressurization
Initial high pressure (exhaust) → mid-term stable pressure (glue curing) → later reduced pressure (anti-rebound).
○ Anti-sticking board treatment: Spray mold release agent on hot-pressed plates (bamboo boards containing sugar and prone to sticking)
Hot press can be different opening and pressure as different OSB production capacity
8. Edge Cutting
Automatic Cut OSB to Be required standard size (such as 1220×2440mm) or other size
9. Sanding Line
One OSB production line usually equipped with 3 sets sanding machine, one for rough sanding panel surface, one for fine calibrating panel surface, one for polishing panel surface, to make OSB boards good quality
10. Heating Center
