Detailed Equipment Description
1. Raw Material Preparation Section
This section transforms logs into uniform, clean, and dry qualified strands.
Debarker & Chipper: Efficiently removes bark (bark removal rate >95%) and reduces debarked logs into standard-sized wood chips using drum or disc chippers.
Strander & Flaker: The core equipment for producing OSB strands. Wood chips are sliced along the grain into long, thin strands (approx. 75-150mm long, 0.5-0.8mm thick). A re-crusher processes oversized material.
Drying System: Reduces strand moisture content from ~40-60% to 2-4% using energy-efficient triple-pass or single-pass rotary drum dryers with precise temperature control and integrated fire/explosion prevention.
Screening & Storage System: Dried strands are graded by multi-deck vibrating screens into surface fines, core coarse strands, and waste dust. Pneumatic conveying systems transport graded strands to large buffer silos, ensuring production continuity and stability of the raw material ratio.
2. Blending, Forming & Pre-pressing Section
This section gives OSB its oriented structure and bonding properties.
Continuous Blender: The "heart" of the line. Precisely meters and applies atomized MDI or PF resin (typically 3-8% of board weight) uniformly onto strands via high-precision nozzles and flow meters. Wax and catalysts can be added online. Separate systems often handle surface and core layers.
Oriented Former: The key to OSB's "oriented" property. Comprises surface and core formers (mechanical with grooved rolls or pneumatic using air jets) that align strands. The typical 3-layer mat has surface strands oriented parallel to the production direction and core strands perpendicular or random, creating a cross-laminated structure.
Pre-press: A belt-type cold press that compresses the loose mat (by >70%) to increase handling strength, prevent edge collapse during transfer, and remove air before hot pressing.
3. Continuous Hot Pressing Section
The core technological value, determining output, quality, and energy efficiency.
Continuous Press: The pre-pressed mat, carried on steel belts, enters this long press (dozens of meters). Multiple precisely controlled pressure zones apply uniform heat (180-220°C) and pressure (up to 5 MPa) to cure the resin and bond the strands.
Advantages:
High Output: Continuous process, capacities exceeding 2,000 m³/day.
Superior Quality: Programmable pressure/temperature profiles ensure uniform density, low internal stress, and minimal thickness tolerance (±0.2mm).
Low Energy Use: Shorter press time and higher thermal efficiency save 20-30% energy vs. multi-opening presses.
High Flexibility: Quick online changeovers for thickness/density without stopping.
Steel Belts & Heating System: Two high-strength alloy steel belts (2.5-3mm thick) carry the mat through the press, guided by tensioning and steering systems. Heating is typically via circulating thermal oil (or steam) with high precision.
4. Finishing & Processing Section
Precision finishing of the pressed continuous board.
Cross-cut Saw & Cooler: An online flying saw cuts the board to length. Hot boards then enter a star-cooler/flipper for forced-air cooling and stress relief.
Sanding Line & Trim Saws: Boards are sanded to exact thickness and smoothness by a wide-belt sander (4-8 heads). Double-end trim saws then cut them to precise width.
5. Central Control & Auxiliary Systems
Central Control System: A fully automated system based on industrial Ethernet and distributed PLCs (e.g., Siemens, Rockwell). Operators monitor and adjust all process parameters from a central station. Integrated MES enables production planning, quality tracking, energy management, and reporting.
Auxiliary Systems: Include hydraulic power units, compressed air systems, a thermal energy center (for drying and pressing heat), a comprehensive dust extraction system (collecting wood dust for potential biofuel use), and electrical distribution.
Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is a high-performance engineered wood product manufactured by bonding oriented wood strands with synthetic resin under heat and pressure.
