Raw materials for OSB

Using low-value wood resources such as small-diameter wood and branch wood to produce Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is a model for the wood industry to utilize resources efficiently, reduce costs, and achieve sustainable development.

 Core Concept and Raw Material Characteristics 

Core Concept: Processing traditionally low-value materials—such as small-diameter wood (diameter < 20cm), thinning wood, forest harvest residues (branches, tops), and even some wood processing scraps—into high-strength, high-value-added engineered panels (OSB) through specific processes and equipment.

Advantages: Low cost, wide availability, sustainable, beneficial for forest management and comprehensive resource utilization.

 Main Production Process 

1. Raw Material Preparation and Pretreatment Section

This is the first critical stage of this type of production line, directly affecting subsequent flake quality and equipment longevity.

  Feeding and Bucking: Raw materials are fed via chain conveyors or grapples and cut to suitable length (typically 2-4 meters) by drum or ring buckers, or directly chipped into specified wood chips by disc chippers.

 Debarking: Efficient debarking is essential due to the high bark content. Drum debarkers are commonly used, removing bark through friction between logs and against the drum walls. The bark is typically sent to the energy plant as fuel.

 Washing and Sorting: Sand, stones, metal, and other contaminants are removed via water washing or dry cleaning (vibrating screens + magnetic separators). Cleaned logs proceed to the next stage.


2. Flaking and Drying Section

This is the core technical stage, determining strand geometry and quality.

  Flaking: Cleaned logs are fed into Ring-type Stranders (or Flakers). This is one of the core machines in an OSB line. It slices logs along the grain to produce ideal large, flat flakes (called "strands" or "flakes"). Strand length, thickness, and geometry can be precisely controlled by adjusting knives, gaps, etc.

  Screening and Re-fining: Strands are classified by size via multi-deck screens. Qualified fine face strands and coarse core strands are conveyed separately. Oversized strands are sent back to a re-finer or hammermill for reduction.

  Drying: Sized wet strands are dried in rotary drum dryers (typically using hot gas from natural gas or biomass burners). Moisture content is reduced to 2-4% to meet requirements for blending and pressing. Drying requires precise control to prevent fire or over-drying.


3. Blending, Forming, and Pressing Section

This is the forming stage that gives OSB its oriented structure and strength.

  Blending (Resin Application): Dried strands are mixed with adhesive in high-speed blenders. OSB primarily uses Phenolic Resin or PMDI (Isocyanate) glue, the latter offering superior waterproofness but at a higher cost. Precise metering systems ensure glue evenly coats each strand.

  Oriented Forming: This is the key process distinguishing OSB from ordinary particleboard. Resinated strands pass through mechanical or electrostatic orienting forming heads. Face strands are oriented parallel to the panel length, while core strands are oriented perpendicularly or randomly, creating the classic "cross-oriented three-layer structure." This structure gives OSB exceptionally high longitudinal strength and good transverse strength.

  Pre-pressing and Hot Pressing: The loose, formed mat is first lightly compacted by a continuous belt pre-press, then cut to length and fed into a multi-opening hot press. Under high temperature (200-220°C) and pressure, the adhesive cures rapidly, bonding the strands firmly into a dense panel.


4. Finishing and Ancillary Sections

  Cooling and Stacking: Pressed panels enter a cooling star or cooler to set, then are stacked for storage.

  Sanding: Panels are sanded to precise thickness and smoothness as required.

  Trimming and Packaging: Panels are trimmed to market sizes via cross-cut and trim saws, then packaged for shipment.

  Energy Center (Thermal Oil Plant/Power Plant): The "power heart" of the entire line. Uses process residues (bark, sander dust, fines) as fuel to generate thermal energy for pressing and drying, achieving energy self-sufficiency and cleaner production.
