The production of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is a continuous process that transforms wood fibre raw materials into a homogeneous board product, consisting of the following core stages:
1. Raw Material Preparation
The main raw materials include small-diameter logs, branches, and wood processing residues. These are processed through a chipper into uniformly sized wood chips (ideal dimensions: length 16–30mm, width 15–25mm, thickness 3–5mm). The chips are then screened to remove oversized or undersized particles, and magnetic separators remove any ferrous metal contaminants. The optimal raw material mix is 60%–70% softwood and 30%–40% hardwood, with bark content not exceeding 5%.
2. Fibre Preparation (Refining)
This is the core stage of MDF production. Qualified wood chips enter the refiner, where they are softened by steam cooking under high temperature and pressure (approximately 160–180°C), then mechanically defibrated in the refining chamber. During this stage, paraffin wax is typically applied as a water repellent, and urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive is sprayed in atomized form evenly onto the fibre surfaces.
3. Drying
The glue-applied wet fibres are conveyed into the drying system, where they come into full contact with hot air. The fibres are suspended in the drying duct for approximately 4–5 seconds, rapidly reducing the moisture content to 8%–12%, meeting the forming requirements.
4. Forming
The dried fibres are uniformly spread onto a conveyor belt by the forming machine, creating a continuous mat. The mat then passes through a pre-press for initial compression, followed by longitudinal trimming and cross-cutting to produce slabs of specified dimensions. The key requirement at this stage is uniform density and consistent thickness across the slab.
5. Hot Pressing
The slabs are fed into a hot press (continuous flat press or multi-opening press) where, under high temperature (approximately 200°C) and gradually increasing pressure (from 2MPa up to 20MPa), the adhesive cures and the fibres form strong bonds. During the pressing cycle, pressure is typically raised to the target level, then reduced to 0.6–1.3MPa during the adhesive curing phase to ensure proper moisture evaporation within the board.
6. Post-Treatment
The pressed rough boards undergo cooling via turnover panels, edge trimming, and sanding to produce finished specification boards. After sanding, boards are graded, labelled, inspected, and stored in the warehouse for at least 24 hours before dispatch.

Core Highlight: Arbitrary Fixed-Length Cutting System
Programmable length setting: input any required length via PLC touchscreen (e.g., 2440mm, 2750mm, 3050mm, or non-standard sizes)
High-precision servo tracking saw: cuts dynamically while the line is running, without interrupting output
Cutting tolerance ≤ ±0.5mm, with smooth edges and no chipping
Automatic tool change and edge scrap collection - minimizes downtime
Supports batch management : mixed production of different lengths within the same batch

Q: What are the classification grades of MDF panels and their applications?
A: According to European Standard EN 622-5, MDF is primarily classified into the following grades:
MDF (for dry conditions) : General-purpose board for indoor dry environments such as furniture, cabinetry, and display stands
MDF.H (for humid conditions) : Moisture-resistant board suitable for higher humidity indoor environments
MDF.LA (load-bearing for dry conditions) : Load-bearing boards for shelving and structural applications
MDF.HLS (load-bearing for humid conditions) : Combines moisture resistance and load-bearing performance
MDF.RWH (roof/wall underlay) : Rigid underlayment for roofs and walls
Q: Is MDF water-resistant? Can it be used in humid environments?
A: Standard MDF has poor moisture resistance due to the use of urea-formaldehyde resin adhesives, and is typically limited to indoor dry conditions. For humid environments, MDF.H grade panels with moisture-resistant resins should be used. Even moisture-resistant MDF is not recommended for prolonged exposure to direct water or outdoor use.
Q: What is the difference between MDF and HDF?
A: HDF (High Density Fibreboard) is a higher-density version of MDF with greater impact resistance and load-bearing capacity, commonly used as flooring substrate. The production processes are essentially identical, with the main difference being the pressing density.
Q: Can the production line use non-wood raw materials?
A: Yes. Modern MDF production technology has been extended to various non-wood plant fibre raw materials, such as empty oil palm fruit bunches and agricultural straw. By adjusting the raw material preparation and refining process parameters, these alternative materials can produce qualified MDF panels, helping reduce dependence on timber and lower production costs.
