Production Process of Formaldehyde-Free OSB

1.  Raw Material Preparation

High-quality softwood logs (e.g., pine, poplar) are used.

Logs are debarked, cleaned, and fed into the strander.

2.  Stranding and Drying

Logs are cut into precisely sized wood strands (typically 50-100mm long, 10-30mm wide, 0.3-0.8mm thick) by the strander.

The wet strands are conveyed into large dryers (usually rotary dryers) to reduce their moisture content uniformly from about 40%-60% down to 2%-4% for the next stages.

3.  Screening and Blending

Dried strands are screened through multi-deck screens to separate fine face-layer material from coarse core-layer material and remove oversize or undersize particles.

Acceptable face and core strands are sent to separate continuous blender lines.

Core Step: A formaldehyde-free adhesive (typically polymeric MDI - isocyanate) is applied evenly onto the strand surfaces via high-pressure spray nozzles. MDI is crucial for achieving the "formaldehyde-free" property as it contains no formaldehyde and offers superior bonding.

4.  Oriented Forming

The resin-coated strands are laid into a mat using advanced orienting forming heads.

A typically three-layer structure is formed: the outer layers are aligned with the panel's length (longitudinal orientation), while the core layer is aligned perpendicularly (cross orientation). This cross-oriented structure gives OSB its high strength and dimensional stability.

5.  Hot Pressing

The formed mat is lightly compressed in a pre-press and then loaded into a high-temperature, high-pressure hot press.

Under high temperature (200-220°C) and pressure (3-5 MPa), the MDI resin cures rapidly, bonding the wood strands firmly into a solid panel.

6.  Cooling, Trimming, and Sanding

The hot panels from the press are cooled on a cooling stack to stabilize internal stresses and prevent warping.

Cooled panels are precisely trimmed to standard sizes (e.g., 1220mm x 2440mm).

The surfaces and edges of the panels are sanded by a sander to ensure uniform thickness and a smooth, even surface.

7.  Quality Inspection and Packaging

Finished panels are sampled and tested to ensure metrics like density, internal bond strength, modulus of rupture, moisture content, and formaldehyde emission (confirming E1 or F-free standard) meet specifications.

Qualified products are labeled, stacked, and wrapped with shrink film for storage and shipment.

Machinery and Equipment

A complete OSB production line is a complex system integrating machinery, hydraulics, thermal energy, electrical control, and automation technologies.

MINGHUNG wood based panel production line

1. Raw Material Section

Debarker: (Drum or Ring type) Removes bark from logs.

Long-Log Strander/Drum Chipper: A core machine that processes whole logs into ideal-sized wood strands.

Strand Surge Bin: Provides buffer storage for green strands before drying.

2. Drying and Screening Section

Rotary Drum Dryer: A core machine. A large, heated, rotating drum that reduces the moisture content of the strands to the target level (2-4%) using hot gases.

Multi-Deck Screening System: Separates dried strands into accepted face and core fractions, and removes oversize and fines.

Crusher/Re-cutter: Recrushes oversize strands for reuse.

3. Blending Section

Weigh Hoppers and Belt Scales: Precisely meter face and core strands to ensure consistent board density and composition.

High-Speed Continuous Blender: A core machine (often a drum type) where formaldehyde-free resin (e.g., MDI), wax, and other additives are applied evenly onto the strands via high-pressure nozzles.

MDI Specialized Feeding System: Includes heated storage tanks, heated lines, precision metering pumps, and spray guns, designed to handle moisture-sensitive MDI.

4. Forming and Pre-pressing Section

Mechanical Orienting Forming Heads: The core of OSB's "oriented" structure. Multiple heads create the cross-oriented layered mat.

Forming Belt and Vacuum System: A moving belt with vacuum suction that holds the loose mat in place after forming.

Continuous Belt Pre-press: Gently compacts the loose mat to reduce thickness, remove air, and provide initial strength for handling.

5. Pressing and Finishing Section

Hot Press: The heart of the production line.

Continuous Pressing Hot Press Machine: This technology is more advanced. The billet passes through the press continuously between two huge steel belts, resulting in more uniform product density, higher quality, higher production efficiency, but the investment is huge.

Function: It provides high temperature (200-220°C) and high pressure (3-5 MPa), enabling MDI glue to cure rapidly in a short time, permanently bonding the wood chips into a high-strength sheet.

Cooling Stacker: Cools the hot panels using forced air to stabilize them and prevent warping.

Trim Saw: A cross-cut and edge trim system that cuts the panels to final dimensions (e.g., 1220mm x 2440mm).

Wide Belt Sander: Sands the top and bottom surfaces to precise thickness and a smooth finish.

6. Auxiliary and Support Systems

Energy Plant: A boiler system that burns process residues (bark, fines) to generate thermal energy for drying and pressing, enabling energy self-sufficiency.

Dust Extraction System: A central dust collection system that maintains a clean plant environment and feeds combustible dust to the energy plant.

Automated Control System (DCS/PLC): The brain of the plant. A computer-based system integrating all equipment for central control, monitoring, and recipe management.

Formaldehyde-Free

It encompasses two key aspects:

1.  No Formaldehyde-Based Adhesives Are Added:

This is the core principle. Traditional engineered wood panels (like some MDF or particleboard) use urea-formaldehyde (UF) or phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins as adhesives. The primary raw material for these adhesives is formaldehyde, causing them to continuously release formaldehyde throughout their entire lifecycle.

"Formaldehyde-Free" boards, however, use adhesives that contain no formaldehyde whatsoever. The most common type is polymeric MDI (isocyanate) or bio-based adhesives (e.g., soy-based glue). This eliminates the source of formaldehyde at its origin.

2.  The Panel's Formaldehyde Emission is Extremely Low, Often Undetectable:

While wood itself contains trace amounts of natural formaldehyde (negligible), "Formaldehyde-Free" panels are rigorously tested and proven to have emissions as low as natural wood. These emissions are often too low to be detected by standard methods or are far stricter than the most stringent international standards (such as Japanese F★★★★ or the US NAF - No Added Formaldehyde standard).

"Formaldehyde-Free" means that no formaldehyde-based adhesives or additives are deliberately used in the manufacturing process. The final product has extremely low formaldehyde emissions, meeting the highest level of environmental and safety performance.

The environmental protection rating does not have a completely unified standard globally, but major markets and regions have their widely recognized standard systems. The core assessment indicators are all related to the release of formaldehyde.

Grade E1 refers to the formaldehyde emission level: ≤ 0.124 mg/m³. This standard is equivalent to the E1 grade standard in Europe.
